Housing stock
A stone core inside two decades of subdivisions
Old Milton grew around the mill pond on Sixteen Mile Creek. Main, Martin, Mill and James Streets keep 19th-century limestone and brick homes and small workers’ cottages, many on the Heritage Register, over low fieldstone basements. From the 1970s to the 1990s, Timberlea, Dorset Park, Bronte Meadows and Mountain View added back-splits, side-splits and raised bungalows, some still on aluminium branch wiring. Then came the boom. Beaty, Clarke, Dempsey, Hawthorne Village, Willmott, Ford, Cobban and Bowes filled in with detached homes on 9–12 m lots, semis and freehold townhouses, some on rear-lane streets with detached garages. Their basements are poured concrete, 2.4–2.7 m tall, with plumbing rough-ins and sump pits, under engineered I-joist floors.

Frequently asked questions
Renovating in Milton: local questions
Yes. Since April 1, 2025, every additional residential unit in Milton must be registered, including older units, family-occupied units and empty ones. Registration costs $340 per unit. A municipal law enforcement officer and a fire prevention officer then inspect for zoning, safety and Fire Code compliance. A passing unit gets a 1-year certificate, renewed free during the 3-year pilot that began in 2025.
Up to 4: the townhouse plus 3 ARUs, on a freehold townhouse with municipal water and sewer. Stacked and back-to-back townhouses are excluded. Access is the real limit. Milton’s by-law requires a clear path at least 1.2 m wide with 2.1 m of headroom from the street to each unit’s entrance, and an interior townhouse has no side yard. Each unit also needs a parking space under By-law 016-2014.
Since January 2026, yes, within limits set by zone and plan area. On RV or C4 lots outside the Niagara Escarpment Plan area, one ARU is allowed in the house or an accessory building. Inside the Escarpment Plan area, one ARU may go inside a detached house in the Escarpment Rural Area designation. Greenbelt Natural Heritage System lands allow none. A1 lots outside the Greenbelt can have 2.
