Exterior And Outdoor Work
Where CarpentryBoys began: decks, fences and pergolas in Hamilton backyards. Today they’re usually part of a bigger renovation.
CarpentryBoys Inc. builds decks, fences, pergolas and gazebos, interlock and concrete, egress windows and below-grade side entrances, and installs flooring across the GTA and Hamilton. Most of these jobs now come as part of a larger project, such as a separate entrance for a legal basement or a deck off a new addition.

Which outdoor projects need a building permit in Ontario?
Decks more than 600 mm (about 24 in) above grade, decks attached to the house, below-grade entrances, new or enlarged window openings, and most structures over 10 m² generally need a permit. Fences and on-grade patios usually don’t, but they must meet local fence and pool-enclosure bylaws.
Rules vary by municipality, so we confirm with the local building department during the quote. A side entrance cut into a foundation wall always needs drawings and a permit, and often an engineer, because it changes the structure and the drainage around the house.
Before any digging we request utility locates through Ontario One Call. Footings for decks, pergolas and fence posts go below the frost line, about 1.2 m (4 ft) in most of Southern Ontario, so they don’t heave in the first winter.
