Pergolas and Gazebos Anchored for Ontario Wind and Snow
Pergolas, louvered roofs and gazebos, in the yard or on a deck.
CarpentryBoys designs and builds freestanding and attached pergolas and roofed gazebos in Hamilton, Burlington, Oakville, Brampton, Mississauga and the GTA. We anchor posts to footings below frost or to a properly reinforced deck, size the roof for local snow and wind loads, and handle the building permit when the size, roof or attachment requires one.
Your project scope
Pergolas & Gazebos by a general contractor
A pergola lag-screwed to deck boards starts to rack, lift or sag after the first windstorm or wet February snowfall. We design the anchoring and roof framing first, then the look.

What's included
One contract covers the whole scope
Freestanding and attached pergolas
Wood or aluminum, on their own footings or tied to the house or deck frame.
Roofed gazebos
Shingled, metal or polycarbonate roofs framed for Ontario snow.
Shade and privacy options
Louvered aluminum roofs, canopies, privacy screens and slat walls.
Lighting and power
A licensed electrician for lights, outlets and fans.

Do you need a permit for a pergola or gazebo in Ontario?
An open, freestanding pergola usually doesn't need a building permit. A solid roof over 10 m² (108 sq ft), or attachment to the house, generally means a permit, and zoning setbacks apply either way.
The Building Code's exemption for accessory buildings up to 15 m² (161 sq ft) is written for detached, one-storey sheds without plumbing. Some cities apply it to gazebos and others don't, so the same gazebo can need a permit in one city and not the next.
Should a pergola be attached to the house or freestanding?
Freestanding is simpler to permit and avoids putting load on the house wall. Attached pergolas save posts and feel like part of the house, but need a proper structural connection and usually a permit.
An attached ledger must reach the framing behind siding or brick, with flashing to keep water out. Freestanding pergolas need knee braces against wind, sized up near the escarpment or the lake. Solid or louvered roofs must carry the snow load in the Building Code's climatic data.

Pergolas & Gazebos: questions we’re asked before contract
Yes, if the deck frame is reinforced where each post lands, with solid blocking or a new beam and a footing below it. Decking boards and a single joist can't hold a post against wind uplift and racking. We open the deck at each post, add through-bolted post bases, and check the deck footings can carry the load.
Freestanding pergola posts should sit on footings about 1.2 m (4 ft) deep, below the frost line in the GTA and Hamilton. Frost can lift shallow footings unevenly, which twists the frame and opens joints. Footings also resist uplift in strong winds, a bigger risk for louvered roofs or privacy walls. Helical piles work where an excavator can't reach or roots are in the way.
Quality aluminum louvered roofs are rated for snow loads, but the rating must meet your municipality's design snow load and you must follow the maker's winter instructions. Most say to leave the louvres open or in a set position during snowfall and to clear heavy accumulations. Motorized units also need protected controls. We check the product rating against your address before ordering.
It depends on your zoning by-law, but accessory structures in GTA cities typically need to stay at least 0.6 m to 1.2 m from side and rear lot lines, more for taller structures. Height and lot coverage limits also apply. These rules apply even without a building permit, and a gazebo in the wrong spot can be ordered removed.
A typical freestanding pergola takes 2 to 5 days on site, and a fully roofed gazebo about 1 to 2 weeks, once materials and any permit are ready. Louvered aluminum systems can have a manufacturer lead time of several weeks. Our 2-Year Material and Workmanship Warranty covers the build, and the roof system or hardware carries the manufacturer's own warranty.
