A few answers to help you take the next step with confidence.

Hire a general contractor once a project involves three or more trades or needs a permit. A basement or kitchen typically needs 6–10 trades: framing, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, insulation, drywall, tile, flooring, finish carpentry and painting. Booking them yourself means sequencing each one around inspections and absorbing the delay when one doesn’t show up. A general contractor like CarpentryBoys schedules every trade, books the inspections, carries the liability and gives you one warranty. Hiring trades directly can make sense for a single-trade job, such as replacing a water heater or refinishing floors.

Yes, and combining scopes usually saves time and money. One contract means one permit application where the work overlaps, one set of drawings, one schedule and one mobilisation, so trades like plumbers and electricians rough in every area in the same visit. On a combined project, our decision rule is to sequence the work so you always keep one working kitchen or bathroom while you live at home. The quote still prices each area separately, so you can see what each part costs and drop or phase one if the budget needs it.

Our phones are answered 7 days a week, 7 AM–7 PM, and a site visit is typically booked within a few days of your call. Call 289-242-3402 or 647-447-6477; one owner covers Hamilton, Halton and Niagara and the other covers Brampton, Peel and Wellington-Dufferin, so the person who visits is an owner who will run the job. Evening and weekend visits are available for clients who work days. Bring any drawings, a rough budget and photos of ideas you like: it makes the first visit far more useful and speeds up the quote.

A proper quote lists the scope room by room, the materials by brand or specification, allowances for anything not yet chosen, permit and drawing costs, the payment schedule, the target start date and duration, warranty terms and HST as a separate line. Every CarpentryBoys quote is written and itemised after a free site visit. If a quote is a single number on one page, you can’t compare it or hold anyone to it. Check also what it excludes: disposal, painting, electrical upgrades and patching after inspections are the usual gaps between a low quote and the final bill.
