Basement Renovations in Hamilton
Lower-city cellars in Crown Point, Gibson and Kirkendall sit on fieldstone or rubble walls with 1.8–2.0 m (6 ft–6 ft 7 in) of headroom. Bungalows in Hill Park and Inch Park have block walls and 2.1 m (7 ft) or more. The escarpment splits Hamilton basement renovations into those two jobs, and CarpentryBoys prices them differently.

Worth knowing first
Stone cellar walls need a gap, not glued-on foam
Lower-city basements in Kirkendall and Durand sit on rubble and fieldstone that has to breathe. Gluing foam board or poly straight onto that Kirkendall stone traps moisture and rots the framing. We repoint loose mortar first. Then a dimpled drainage membrane sheds water to an interior perimeter drain and sump. The stud wall stands off the membrane, insulated with mineral wool or closed-cell spray foam. It costs a few dollars more per square foot than a block-wall finish in Hill Park. It is also why a Crown Point basement stays dry after the drywall goes up.

Frequently asked questions
Basements in Hamilton: three local questions
Yes, within limits. At 1.8 m (5 ft 11 in) clear, a lower-city cellar can become dry storage, a laundry or a workshop. Bedrooms and a legal unit need more height under the 2024 Ontario Building Code, and most Crown Point and Gibson cellars fall short. Lowering the floor fixes that, at tens of thousands of dollars with an engineer's design. We measure under the beams first.
No. The Protective Plumbing Program excludes homes currently adding a secondary dwelling unit. We include the valve in the second-unit scope instead. The City's published fees for pre-qualified installers give a fair benchmark: roughly $1,300 to $1,600 plus a $291 permit. For a rec room or in-law space that is not a separate unit, the grant can still apply with a contractor from the City's list.
Yes, if the house predates 1955 and the pipe hasn't been checked. The service enters through the front foundation wall, right where a finished wall or closet tends to go. Book Hamilton Water's free inspection first. If it is lead, replacing the private section lets the City replace the public part, and a $3,000 loan is repaid on your water bill. We sequence it as the first trade on site.
