Restaurant & Café Renovations in Brampton

Tandoor ovens, busy fryers and stock pots put more heat and grease under a Brampton restaurant hood than a typical café. South Asian kitchens, sweet shops and banquet halls set the pace here, so exhaust, make-up air and interceptor capacity take more of the budget than décor. Most open in plazas along Queen Street East and Bovaird Drive.

Worth knowing first

Tandoors and sweet shops change the hood and the interceptor

Brampton's dining mix shapes the kitchens. A charcoal or wood-fired tandoor is a solid-fuel appliance under NFPA 96 and generally needs its own exhaust, separate from the gas cooking line. A gas tandoor can share a hood sized for it. Sweet shops frying snacks or simmering milk send plenty of fat to the drain, so they still need an interceptor under Peel's Wastewater By-law 53-2010. It is sized from the connected fixtures, so a compact takeout may use a smaller unit. In older Bramalea plazas the sanitary line sometimes sits on the wrong side of the unit, which lengthens the trench.

Frequently asked questions

Restaurants in Brampton: three local questions

Yes. Brampton requires a Fixed Food Premises licence for any business that prepares, stores or sells food to the public. Applications are online only and need proof of at least $2,000,000 in commercial general liability insurance. The City can issue a conditional licence valid for 90 days before the health inspection. The condition comes off once Peel Public Health confirms it has no objection.

Yes, with a Temporary Seasonal Patio Permit. The 2026 season runs April 4 to October 31, patios close by 11 p.m., and structures come down by November 7. You need a Brampton business licence as a restaurant, café or bar, insurance, landlord approval, neighbour consent for shared frontage and a site sketch. A structure within 3 m of a building or over 60 m² needs a building permit.

Only if zoning lists the use. Turning an east-end warehouse bay into a banquet or catering hall changes the use to assembly. Once zoning confirms it, the Building Division reviews occupant load, exits, washrooms, sprinklers and parking. Ask the City for zoning confirmation before you sign the lease. Then budget for exits and washrooms sized to the hall's capacity.
